The Origin: Hashcash and Anti-Spam

Proof of Work (PoW) was originally invented by Cynthia Dwork and Moni Naor in 1993, and independently developed by Adam Back in 1997 as Hashcash to deter email spam by requiring senders to expend a fraction of a second of CPU time.

Satoshi Nakamoto applied this concept to decentralized money. In Bitcoin’s Proof of Work, miners repeatedly compute the SHA-256 hash of a candidate block header together with an incrementing number called a nonce until the resulting hash is lower than the network’s target difficulty.

The Difficulty Adjustment Algorithm

If millions of new computers join the mining network, blocks would be found too quickly. Conversely, if miners shut down, blocks would take hours. Bitcoin solves this by automatically recalculating the mining difficulty every 2,016 blocks (approximately two weeks), adjusting so that average block intervals remain precisely 10 minutes.
